Nelson: Norton was so tough

Sky Sports' boxing expert Johnny Nelson says the late Ken Norton was a hugely popular and respected figure throughout the boxing world.

The former world heavyweight champion passed away at a care facility in Arizona on Wednesday at the age of 70, having suffered congestive heart failure.

The American great was involved in a string of memorable bouts, and was considered something of a bogeyman for the great Muhammad Ali.

The pair were involved in three epic fights, Norton winning the first on a split decision after breaking Ali's jaw, before Ali won the second, also on a split decision, and the third, when he was given a very controversial verdict.

Nelson described Norton as "tough, through and through, and very well-respected in the boxing world".

He added: "He was a bogeyman for a lot of fighters. He was very tough to dissect and get through so, unless you were an outstanding fighter, you struggled against him.

"He boxed the best, Larry Holmes, Earnie Shavers, Jimmy Young and, of course Ali and George Foreman. This guy was tough, an ex-marine.

"If you look on Twitter and the Internet, there are not many, if any, people who had a bad word to say about him.

"Ken Norton was the gatekeeper to the heavyweight division. If he boxed in today's era, he'd be a champion, without a doubt."

Norton utilised quite an unusual style and Nelson added: "It was sort of a cross-block style, very unconventional in regards to boxing so, if you had somebody like that in front of you, you thought 'this isn't what I've trained to try and get through'.

"Norton came in with that style, and he was very athletic with it as well, and very physical as well, so he could make it very hard for an opponent to figure him out and get the timing.

"Ali was one of the greatest fighters we've ever seen but he still struggled with this man and his speed, his jab, his style, his fitness.

"All of a sudden, Ali had to depend on his skill more than anything else.

"You kind of felt sorry for Norton because you thought 'you know what, you boxed Ali three times and they should have given you the mark on every occasion, because you made life hard for him'. It was close and they gave the nod to Ali."

Norton was also involved in a classic fight with Larry Holmes in 1978, losing his title on a split decision after an enthralling contest.

"One of the greatest heavyweight fights you could ever see," said Nelson. "15 rounds of an immense, class fight, and it was the passing of the baton. That fight had everything, it was second to none."

Jose confident of progress

Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho remains confident that his side will qualify for the knockout stages of the Champions League, despite their loss at home to Basel.
The Swiss side came from a goal behind to win 2-1 on Wednesday night, ending the Blues' 29-match unbeaten home run in Champions League group-stage matches.
Mourinho's men had been seen as hot favourites to qualify from a group which also includes Steaua Bucharest and Schalke but they now have work to do after the unexpected setback.
However, Mourinho said: "The objective of finishing in the top two in the group phase and to go to the next stage of the Champions League is an objective that is not lost - far from it.
"It's an objective we're going to fight for and it's an objective that I believe very, very much that we're going to achieve.
"We lost three points that we must get somewhere. We must get them, (from) Basel, or Schalke, or Bucharest, or all of them, or some of them.
"Normally you have to win the matches at home and get a few points away.
"Now we must win six points at home, Schalke and Steaua, but we have also to win points away. Probably we have to go to win at Basel to compensate for the defeat."
Mourinho insists he is happy with his striking options and says he is expecting improvement from new-boy Samuel Eto'o, who has arrived from Russian side Anzhi Makhachkala.
"The sharpness, that click to score, we have to wait," said Mourinho. "But he's a great player and he will score goals."

Jose: Champions title a dream

Jose Mourinho insisted he was not obsessed with winning the Champions League with Chelsea ahead of kicking off this season's group stages at home to Basel tonight. Mourinho won the European Cup as boss with Porto and Internazionale but failed to reach the continent's holy grail in his previous stint at Stamford Bridge as well as in his three years in charge of Real Madrid. However, the Portuguese claimed it was more of a dream now, than an obsession, to win it again with the Londoners. "Let's see what happens. I have to focus not on the past but on the future. "There's no obsession for me with this competition. No obsession for Chelsea. But I want to win it for a third time, and I want Chelsea to win it for a second time. "This is the beginning of a process with us and the Champions League. "We made history by winning it two seasons ago. Last year we made history by being the only champions eliminated from the group stage after six matches, and we ended up in a competition we didn't want to play in. "This season we have some players with different experience, but the potential to win it. "We have to build a team full of talented players without the experience and the football philosophy born of having worked together for a long time. "Basel are a very difficult opponent, they've beaten Manchester United and Tottenham in the last two years. Chelsea had a dream and that came true by winning the Champions League. If you win it once you dream about winning it twice. "The first objective of this team has to be a process which ends with an identity, a philosophy and a style of play. "I had a fantastic time here before and most of the people I worked with are still here. The fans have given me everything." Mourinho appears to be tempering expectations six years on from the end to his first spell as boss, by speaking of the need to nurture young talent. Ahead of the Rosenberg clash which precipitated his sacking in 2007, Mourinho delivered a cryptic message about eggs - interpreted as a parting shot at Roman Abramovich and the owner's recruitment policy. Asked what his eggs are like now, Mourinho said: "Beautiful young eggs, eggs that need a mum, in this case a dad, to take care of them. "And one day we'll arrive in a moment when the weather changes, the sun rises, we break the eggs and the eggs are ready to go for life at the top level." Basel boss Murat Yakin says his side are underdogs, despite having a good record against English clubs, helping to knock out Manchester United from the 2011/12 Champions League and eliminating Tottenham from the Europa League last term.

United reveal record revenue

Manchester United have announced record annual revenue, rising by 13.4% to £363.2million for the year to June 30, 2013.

With new deals being announced on almost a weekly basis, it is no surprise that commercial revenues have risen a huge 29.7% to £152.5m for the year ended June 30, 2013.

It is the most significant rise in the 13.4% overall increase in turnover to a club record of £363.2m. The club's debt has fallen by 10.9% to £389.2million.

The adjusted profit for the period is £17.2m.

Wages have risen 11.6% to £180.5m, partly as a result of the club taking on more staff to work on its new digital operation, but also an increase in player salaries.

United have reported a rise in sponsorship revenue alone of 44.1% to £90.9m.

However, broadcast revenue dipped 2.3% to £101.6m as United gained only a 25% share of Champions League revenue paid to England's four competing clubs last season, due to a second-place finish behind Manchester City in the previous campaign.

An increase in matchday revenues of 10.5% to £109.1m was mainly due to Old Trafford being a host Olympic venue, while the club confirmed "exceptional items" costs of £6.2m were partly due to costs incurred with the flotation in New York, but also contracts of coaching staff - Mike Phelan, Rene Meulensteen and Eric Steele - being paid up following the summer departure of manager Sir Alex Ferguson.

It was also stated in the results that net finance increased £21.3m to £70.8m, primarily due to a £22m premium paid to buy back some of its bonds, which will save interest payments in future years.

The impressive commercial results come as United are explaining their troublesome transfer window to supporters, with communications director Phil Townsend insisting funds were available to Moyes, even though he only ended up signing Marouane Fellaini from Everton.

"The club has always backed the manager in the transfer market, as Sir Alex (Ferguson) has said on many occasions and it will continue to do so," said Townsend in a letter to fans who wrote to United for an explanation of what appeared an underperforming transfer window.

"The club has demonstrated its belief in, and commitment to, David Moyes through the award of a six-year contract.

"Allowing him to shape the future Manchester United team is a long term project not an eight-week panic.

"He must be given time to assess his new squad and come to his own decisions on which players he feels will strengthen it.

"Additional resources were there to add to that but it was not possible to agree with other clubs for the right players to leave.

"The key point there is that the players we buy have to be the right ones for Manchester United; not just any player."

United wait on Welbeck, Jones

Manchester United manager David Moyes will give late fitness tests to Danny Welbeck and Phil Jones before finalising his line-up for tonight's Champions League tie against Bayer Leverkusen.
England striker Welbeck is suffering from a knee injury while Jones is still struggling with the ankle injury he picked up in the 1-0 defeat to Liverpool at the start of the month.
However, the Scot can again call on the services of midfielder Shinji Kagawa who has recovered from the bout of flu which saw him sit out the 2-0 home win over Crystal Palace at the weekend.
Leverkusen counterpart Sami Hyypia, whose side lie third in the Bundesliga after chalking up four wins from their opening five games, will check on the fitness of midfielder Lars Bender (hip) before naming his starting line-up.
But the former Liverpool defender will be unable to include Jens Hegeler and Gonzalo Castro after injury ruled the duo out of the Old Trafford showpiece.
Hyypia, who picked up the only red card of his career at the same ground 10 years ago, admits he is aware of United's threat but is hopeful his gameplan will see them take a positive result back to Germany.
"We know exactly what we will be up against at Old Trafford," said the Finn.
"However, we have to stop them getting into their rhythm and make sure they don't score in open play. Then we need to be very aware at set pieces."

Pellegrini: No Kompany risks

Manuel Pellegrini is poised to welcome back skipper Vincent Kompany for Manchester City's Champions League game against Czech side Viktoria Plzen, live on Sky Sports.
The defender, who has not played since suffering a groin injury in the opening game of the season, has travelled with the squad ahead of the Group D encounter.
Pelligrini had previously admitted that he hoped to welcome Kompany back for next weekend's derby against Manchester United.
But it now seems he could be back in action sooner than expected although Pellegrini was at pains to stress he would not take any unnecessary risks with the Manchester City captain's fitness.
"Vincent has worked with us normally for the last two days," Pellegrini said at a pre-match press conference at the Doosan Arena.
"We will see if he is 100 per cent. If he is, of course he will play. We will talk with the doctor and decide.
"I think he will be 100 per cent, but if he is not he will not play.
"We have a very important match but we have other players if any are not 100 per cent."
Without Kompany, City have kept clean sheets in their last two games leading Pellegrini to play down the impact of the Belgian's absence.
"Vincent is a very important player for us. He has been injured for about one month.
"But without Vincent, except for the game against Cardiff, the defence played very well. We have had three clean sheets.
"Vincent is very important but we have a squad. We have replacements for any player who is injured."
Pellegrini also revealed that City go into their opening fixture of this season's Champions League with the objective of taking all three points.
"Of course we have to win this game. It is very important to start the group winning the first game," he said.
"But the Champions League is never easy. If we think we have weak teams in our group we are making a big mistake.
"Plzen are a very good team. I know they are a team that have not lost in the last 13 or games and are the champions in the Czech league.
"It will not be easy but we will try to continue to the last 16."

Moyes wants action on diving

Manchester United manager David Moyes says he thinks retrospective punishment should be used as part of the effort to stop players from diving. Moyes confirmed that he has spoken to United winger Ashley Young, who was booked for simulation during the 2-0 home victory over Crystal Palace on Saturday. Young's booking has prompted much debate about the diving issue and Palace chairman Steve Parish thinks offenders should be sent off. And Moyes, who has always been a stern critic of diving, says he has left Young in no doubt about his feelings on the subject. But he also stressed that the diving incident had been dealt with correctly at the weekend by referee Jon Moss. "I've had a word with him (Young) privately and, as I said after the game, I've said for many years we should have retrospective video for diving," said Moyes. "I think that would help referees no end, as it's really difficult at times. It doesn't change my views, whether I'm at Everton or whether I'm at Manchester United. "We can make up all the things we like about punishment but the rules are there and the referees have got the rules they have to abide by. "The referee on Saturday did what he had to do, he gave him a yellow card. "The referee got it correct and he gave the punishment for it, so I don't see why the debate should go on any longer."

Williams honoured by title

Serena Williams admitted she was "honoured" to draw level with Roger Federer with 17 grand slam titles.
The 31-year-old registered a 7-5 6-7 (8-6) 6-1 victory over Victoria Azarenka in the final of the US Open on Sunday.
Williams, who also won the French Open title this year, is now just one grand slam success behind Chris Evert and Martina Navratilova.
"It's an honour to be even with Roger," said Williams.
"He's been such a great champion throughout the years, and he's just an unbelievable competitor and he's still playing, and he can probably still win more."
Despite losing only four matches all season, two of those defeats have come in grand slams. And Williams claims see would have been disappointed if she hadn't won at Flushing Meadows for a fifth time.
She said: "I felt almost disappointed with my year, to be honest.
"I felt like, yeah, I won the French Open, but I wasn't happy with my performances in the other two slams, and not even making it to the quarter-finals of one.
"So I definitely feel a lot better with at least a second grand slam under my belt this year."
Azarenka was in tears at the end but felt there was nothing more she could have done.
The world No 2 described the determination of both players as rising like boiling water, and she said: "It was a great match.
"There was no letdown. I think in the third set the momentum changed a little bit, and I kind of felt like I lost that momentum.
"But she really made it happen. In that particular moment she was tougher. She was more consistent and she deserved to win.
"I wish I could have done something better. I felt like I had opportunities in the first set as well. But it's okay. I did everything I could.
"The game overall, there are things that could have been better. But I gave my heart. I fought as hard as I could.
"So that's what is important for me, that I lost to a great champion."

Rafa-Novak set for epic final

Rafael Nadal will be looking to continue his remarkable campaign when he recommences his great rivalry with Novak Djokovic in the US Open final.
The Spaniard has racked up nine titles from 13 tournaments contested since coming back from injury, putting himself on course to wrestle the world number one spot away from his opponent.
Monday's final will be a 37th clash between the pair, eclipsing the ATP World Tour Open Era record previously held by the Ivan Lendl-John McEnroe rivalry.
Nadal currently leads the head-to-head 21-15 having won five of their last six meetings after suffering seven successive final defeats to the Serb.
However, all but one of those recent triumphs came on clay courts, while the Serb has won 11 of their 17 meetings on hard courts, with a four-match winning streak on the surface ended by his three-set loss in Montreal last month.
That victory in Canada prompted the bookmaker's to move Nadal to the head of the betting for the US Open, a position which has only strengthened during the fortnight of action in New York.
Sky Bet make the Spaniard 4/6 favourite as he heads into the clash on the back of a 21-match unbeaten streak on the surface in question, having landed Masters 1000 titles in Indian Wells, Cincinnati and Montreal.
The nature of Nadal's recent success is all the more remarkable, dropping a solitary set en route to the final and having his service broken just once.
Djokovic is not to be written off, however, having won four of the last six majors contested on hard courts, being denied in finals on the other two occasions.
Picking a winner from this renewal of one of sport's greatest rivalries looks an unenviable task, but with 18 sets being contested in their last four Grand Slam meetings another epic clash looks inevitable.

Getoar what makes

Lampard: Kiev result crucial

Frank Lampard admits that victory in Ukraine in Tuesday's World Cup qualifier will put England in a strong position to book their ticket for next summer's World Cup.
England drew 1-1 with Ukraine came when they came to London last September and Lampard knows he and his team-mates will have to improve on that Wembley display in Kiev this week.
"They had a bad start to the group but against us they played with a lot of talent, they have a lot of technical ability and pace on the wings," Lampard told a press conference on Sunday.
"I don't think we were at our best that night but to not lose when you're not at your best is a good thing.
"We'll go there conscious they're a strong team but confident in our own abilities. We've got the team to get a result, no doubt."
England will be without Danny Welbeck, Daniel Sturridge and Wayne Rooney in Kiev, and the absence of the former will be most keenly felt, according to Lampard.
"It's a big blow. He's started the season well and he's a very talented player," said Lampard of Welbeck.
"I've enjoyed watching him for Man United and he scored two goals the other night, but we've got players who can come in and do the same job.
"With Theo Walcott, Raheem Sterling, Ashley Young and James Milner, we've got a lot of depth on the wings."
England lead Group H on goal difference from Montenegro, with Ukraine only a point behind and Poland five points adrift.
Lampard said: "We were very aware it was a tough group from the outset.
"People can dismiss a group when they don't see a Spain or a Germany, but we were aware there were some tough teams there.
"We've got to go out on Tuesday and get a result. It's in our own hands with two home games to come after that.
"We've got two tough home games to come, but I think if we can fly back with three points, then we're in a very strong position to go through."
Lampard will be the eigth England player to reach the milestone of 100 caps if, as expected, he features on Tuesday.
Peter Shilton currently holds the record for the most capped player with 125 appearances.
David Beckham is the highest capped outfield player with 115 while, of the current crop, Ashley Cole and Steven Gerrard have also members of the 100 club.
"I will be very proud if I get on the pitch because it's been a long time but it wouldn't be enjoyable to reach 100 and get the wrong result," he added.

Serena eyes fifth US Open joy

World number one Serena Williams is gunning for a 17th Grand Slam title when she takes on Victoria Azarenka in the US Open final in Flushing Meadows on Sunday.
Williams is seeking back-to-back titles in New York in a repeat of last year's final which she won in three sets against Belarusian Azarenka.
After titles in 1999, 2002, 2008 and last year the American is seeking her fifth US Open crown. She has lost two finals, in 2001 to sister Venus and the 2011 final to Australia's Samantha Stosur.
Williams is six Grand Slam triumphs behind Steffi Graf's all-time record of 22 majors, but the 31-year-old is not letting herself think about closing in on the German's all-time record.
"I can't think about it," Williams said. "It's so close but still so far. I have to play a great player and play great tennis."
Williams, who has lost only 16 games over six matches, could win the title 18 days before her 32nd birthday, making her 293 days older than the previous oldest winner, Australian Margaret Court, who won the 1973 title.
Not since Williams in 2008 has a US Open champion lifted the trophy without losing a set, but Serena could make it happen Sunday by winning her ninth crown of the year, what would be her career-record title haul for one season.
"I have been really focused," she said. "My practices have been much better than my matches. I set some goals for myself in my matches and I've met those goals every time."
But world number two Azarenka, 24, sees herself as a more versatile and dangerous player than when she lost to Williams 6-2, 2-6, 7-5 in the final a year ago.
"There are aspects that got better physically," Azarenka said. "Mentally I felt like this year was a great turning point for me on some level for my career. I feel like I'm a better player. I'm a more complete player.
"From the groundstrokes to movement to coming in to variety, I think all those little things are coming together, paying a lot more details on how to create a bigger arsenal."
Azarenka, who won the past two Australian Open titles, seeks a third career Grand Slam title and could become the first woman since Martina Hingis in 1997 to win the US and Australian Opens in the same year.
Williams leads the all-time rivalry 12-3 but Azarenka has won two of three matches this year, most recently in last month's Cincinnati final.

Coleman defends Bale move

Wales boss Chris Coleman admitted that Gareth Bale was never going to feature in the World Cup qualifying defeat to Macedonia.
Coleman raised eyebrows when he named Bale on the bench despite the Real Madrid midfielder not having played any football since July.
The world-record signing watched from the dugout as his team-mates slipped to a 2-1 defeat, and Coleman revealed afterwards that the decision to name Bale as a substitute was an attempt at mind games.
Coleman insisted Bale was not fit enough to play any part, and that his presence was merely a ploy to unsettle opposition number Cedomir Janevski.
When asked if he considered bringing Bale on to try and salvage a draw in the late stages, a tetchy Coleman replied: "What part of he's not fit are you not listening to? Why bring him on if he's not fit?
"You think I would not have used him if he was fit? I don't mind what other people think. What I look at is the opposition. If I'm the opposition manager and Bale is on the bench, maybe it would affect his thinking.
"If he was fit he would have played. I spoke to him, he is not ready. Simple. I haven't conned the supporters to say he might play. If there was a chance he would have played, but there wasn't. We can't take the risk."
Coleman was angered further when questioned about losing his passport earlier this week, which delayed his arrival in Skopje until late on Thursday.
Asked if he was planning to apologise over the incident, Coleman said: "To who? What are you talking about? What you don't know is what we do day to day. All the work had been done. If we'd won you wouldn't make much out of it, but you will because we lost and that's up to you."
On the match, Coleman insisted his team were unfortunate to leave Skopje empty-handed after having the better of much of the encounter.
He said: "The pitch was not great and didn't help the way we play, but we stuck at it and were probably beaten by the pitch at the end of the day. They can feel very lucky to get three points.
"Sometimes when you lose and you deserve to lose then at least you can go back and think you could do better but for large periods of the game we were on top and taking the game to Macedonia and had a lot of opportunities."
Coleman was also disappointed with the performance of Swiss referee Sascha Kever, who he thought was too lenient in his treatment of the home side.
He continued: "Nowadays the rules are you can't pull shirts - I'm 60 yards away from both boxes and I can tell you there were a lot of shirts being pulled.
"The referee is closer than I am, why can't he see it? There were a few incidents we weren't happy with at all, one or two bad challenges that on another day are red cards.
"But we got on with it, we didn't come for one point, we came for three. We took the game to them and we came away with nothing. Unfortunately sometimes in football you don't always get what you deserve."

Prince targets Premier League

Sheffield United's new co-owner Prince Abdullah will do "whatever it takes" to get the club back in the Premier League.
The Prince, grandson of Saudi Arabia's founder, has bought a 50% stake from co-chairman Kevin McCabe and arrives with United in the lower reaches of League One.
But despite that unpromising starting point Prince Abdullah, who says he was seduced by the club's 124-year history after meeting McCabe at a Chelsea game in January, has set a target of Premier League football within five years.
He told Sky Sports News: "I'm under no illusions it will be easy. Maybe five years is a bit ambitious, but I prefer to have ambitious goals and fail than to have easy goals and succeed.
"We want to go to the Premier League - I think it will be difficult but it will not be impossible. With the help of the fans, hopefully we'll be there sooner rather than later."
The prince would not be drawn on the level of investment he is ready to make but rubbished suggestions his personal wealth runs into multi-billions.
He said: "We agreed I would bring in an amount of money Kevin thinks is enough for us to get to the next level, but we will do whatever it takes.
"I read some ridiculous reports about £18bn - I wish I had one tenth of that and I would be very happy!
"I know that investing in sport and a club like this is not the safest investment ever, but I've worked hard for all the money I have so I don't like throwing my money away.
"If I did not think this offered me a reasonable chance to compete and be successful I wouldn't have done it."
McCabe said: "I met the Prime fortuitously, and we had a general chat about NFL, Chelsea, football. I couldn't resist introducing Sheffield United and some of the background to the club.
"It was a very friendly conversation that we then followed up with an exchange of emails, and one thing led to another.
"I think he recognised that - with all the infrastructure, a great stadium and a great academy - we are in the wrong league, and the ingredients are probably far better than other clubs he looked at in the Championship."

Murray: Wawrinka too strong

Andy Murray admitted he was out-played after being demolished in straight sets by Stanislas Wawrinka in the US Open quarter-finals.
The World No 3 looked relatively comfortable until the end of the opening set, but was then brutally exposed by the brilliance of the Swiss in a 6-4 6-3 6-2 defeat in a blustery Arthur Ashe Stadium.
It was a lacklustre and error-strewn performance by the Brit 12 months after lifting the US Open trophy, but Murray paid tribute to his ninth-seeded-conqueror.
"I would have liked to have played a little bit better," Murray said. "When it's breezy conditions it's difficult but I've had a good run the last couple of years. It's a shame I had to play a bad match.
"I thought he played great. I made a few mistakes but for the most part he hit a lot of lines, he hit big shots and he played too well.
"When he had the wind with him he served very well and I had to do a lot of defending. Everyone takes a little time to feel comfortable on the court, but I didn't think I was playing poorly. I would have liked to play better.
"I thought there were a fair few long points, but I didn't get into enough return games, which was disappointing for me."
Murray conceded it had been a long road since he broke into the top, first at the Olympics on home turf last year, then with the two major titles.
"When you work hard at something for a lot of years, it's going to take time to fire yourself up and get to training 110%," the 26-year-old said about his preparation for the year's final Grand Slam.
"That's something kind of natural after what happened at Wimbledon. If I'm meant to win every Grand Slam I play or be in the final, it's just very, very difficult just now. With the guys around us, it's very challenging."
It was though a stunning show by Wawrinka who didn't even face a break point on his way to earning his first Grand Slam semi-final berth, producing 45 winners compared to 15 for his opponent.
"Andy Murray's the defending champion, he's a tough opponent. For me to get through in three sets is amazing," said the Swiss 28-year-old who will play top seed Novak Djokovic or Mikhail Youzhny for a place in the final.
"The first set was not easy. It was really windy today. To get that set gave me confidence for the rest of the match. So much was going through my head in the last game.
"I just try to be focused, to play solidly, aggressively, to take the match and not let him back. I'm going to relax a little bit, and then I'll watch the night session to see who wins."

Everton squad 'stronger' now

Roberto Martinez reckons Everton emerged as winners from the transfer window - not least because they kept Leighton Baines.
A hectic deadline day saw Everton finally sanction Marouane Fellaini's move to Manchester United, for £4m more than a buyout clause in his deal which expired at the end of July.
Martinez had already lined up a replacement in the shape of James McCarthy, and that transfer was pushed through along with loan deals for Romelu Lukaku and Gareth Barry.
And to add to the sense of satisfaction at Goodison Park, there was no last-ditch bid for long-time United target Baines, whose loyalty is now likely to be rewarded with an improved contract.
Martinez said: "Leighton is a massively important player for us and the future of the football club. We want to do anything we can to reward that and he deserves the appreciation and deserves to know how we feel about him.
"It's all positive. He's been an outstanding performer for Everton for years and now clearly he's at the peak of his career and we're going to make sure he feels that warmth from the football club and from a contractual point of view exactly the same.
"It's vital for the future and for the plans we have at the club. So we're going to make sure that we show him that."
On Fellaini's exit he said: "Everything was done on our terms and that's what is important.
"We wish him well, but I do feel that when you lose a player you need to end up with a squad in better shape and I think that's what we achieved.
"As you know the contractual situation of Marouane was quite straight forward. His contract (buy-out clause) expired on July 31. From that point on the evaluation was completely different and he had a premium on top."
Fellaini's early-season form had been overshadowed by that of academy graduate Ross Barkley, and the teenager is in England's squad for their World Cup qualifiers against Moldova and Ukraine.
Football Association chairman Greg Dyke this week outlined his fear that the likes of Barkley are finding it increasingly difficult to break through in the Premier League because of the high percentage of non-English players.
Martinez said: "I think it's very important that guidance comes from the top and clearly the FA and the Premier League need to give us that guidance.
"We are all wishing the same - to develop as much home grown talent as we can and make sure England have got a team that can compete to win major titles.
"I think it's important that direction, instruction and the programme come from the very top so everyone can follow it."

Clarke: Injury won't stop me

Australia captain Michael Clarke has insisted he will continue to play Test and one-day cricket despite concerns over his ongoing back problem.
Clarke was forced to sit out the Champions Trophy at the start of the summer but returned to lead his side in the Ashes.
Australia lost that 3-0 but attention has now turned to the five-match ODI series that starts in Headingley on Friday and Clarke believes his body can handle the pressure of playing both forms of the game at international level.
"I don't know how many one-day games and Test matches I have played throughout my career but I have managed to stay on the park for the majority of those," he said.
"It's obviously manageable and I feel as fit and strong as I have been throughout my career so I don't see why I cannot continue to manage it and carry on playing in both forms of the game.
"If you look at my preparation leading up to the Champions Trophy, I had time off and didn't go to the IPL to get myself fit and strong.
"My preparation, my training was outstanding when I got over to England and five days later, I did my back.
"I don't know what is perfect preparation for my back but I think I can manage my body as well as I have done in the past and that will allow me to continue playing both forms.
"I love one-day cricket, I enjoy Test cricket and I love being part of both sides and captaining both sides. Right now I haven't even thought about that (quitting one form of the game)."
As for the series itself, Clarke promised they will take it as seriously as they would the Ashes, especially with Australia due to co-host the 2015 World Cup with New Zealand.
"I know the Ashes is a very important series, probably the pinnacle for any Australia or English Test cricketer but to me, every series is important for Australia," he added.
"It was a no-brainer for me to stay here and play these one-dayers. I want to play every game I can for Australia and I will prepare like I would if it was the first Test of The Ashes.
"The pinnacle of one-day cricket is the World Cup, so we want to make sure we are playing really good cricket when that comes around."
Clarke admitted they had turned in some uneven performances but remained confident they can improve their fortunes, especially when playing away from home.
"In both forms of the game we have not been as consistent as we could be," he said.
"In patches we have played pretty well bit we need to perform when we are away from home. Our most recent trips to the UK have not been successful.
"Let's hope we can turn that around."
